The BA (Hons) Product Design course focuses on creative and design skills in order to develop new products for manufacture within a wide range of creative industries. These include:
During the first two years you will be studying alongside BSc (Hons) Product Design and BA (Hons) Furniture and Product Design courses. This enables you to develop a multi-disciplinary perspective and also the flexibility to switch to either of the other courses at the start of your second year if you feel you'd be better suited to developing your career in the BA (Hons) Product Design or Furniture and Product Design area.
The final year runs is run simular to the Furniture course, however with the projects driven towards a product direction as apposed to product. Product Design has produced a wide range of designers with many of the going on to have successful design careers.
The BSc (Hons) Product Design course has a technical bias and deals with an integrated approach to the design of products for applications including:
With the third year based in industry, makes the students far more employable as gradutates. NTU is top in the UK for the number of students on design courses on year-long placements (HESA data 2010/11).
Moreover students from BSc (Hons) Product Design regularly enter national competitions designing to industry briefs, making them better prepared for industry.
Furniture and Product Design is a highly credited course that has been established at NTU for a number of years. Providing a wide and in-depth knowledge of the design process and manufacturing of both furniture and products, it prepares students for placement year and consequently the design industry.
Whilst the first and second years consists of live project briefs, group presentation and learning CAD programs. The third year is an optional placement opportunity which our students would greatly urge you to do. Finally the four year is made up of three projects; Minor, Major and your dissertation. All briefs and topics are set by the student themselves. Whether they choose to find a live brief, or are being funded by their placement company, each student must produce one piece of furniture and one product.
Using their research, sketching, computer, manufacturing and communication skills, NTU students produce work to a repeatedly high standard every year. Producing designs which go on to win awards and even help set up companies after they’ve graduated.
The final year is very much driven by the student themselves, meaning that the student must be disciplined and be able to manage their time well. But with the large amount of work comes a supportive atmosphere within the course which helps get us all through it.
